Costas Pulls Double Duty With a Humorous Appearance for Fox
By RICHARD SANDOMIR
Published: August 9, 2007

Frank Caliendo has frequently imitated John Madden on “Fox N.F.L. Sunday,” and has also mocked the size of Bob Costas of NBC by using a little person, dressed in a suit, during his sketches. Yesterday, the faux Madden and the real Costas met during a skit taped three weeks ago.

“Hey, where’s that little guy who plays Costas?” Caliendo asked, which brought the real, nearly 5-foot-7 Costas on-screen.

Costas mocked Caliendo’s height (a shade below Costas’s), offered a list of renowned people shorter than he, and told Caliendo: “I work with John Madden. Frank, you don’t measure up.”

Caliendo tried a ruse (“Look, a thesaurus!”) to sucker punch Costas, but Costas laid him out instead. Costas’s Fox collaboration came after Caliendo filled in for him as the M.C. of a charity event. Caliendo said, “I wanted to make sure he called me Frank, so he’s not punching out John Madden; he’s punching out this goofball.”

Their sketch was kept a secret from all but a few at Fox. “We sat around watching it at NBC today and nobody knew about it,” Costas said before he was host of NBC’s “Football Night in America.” He added, “Ebersol called from Dallas to say he was amused.” Dick Ebersol is the chairman of NBC Universal Sports.

Scott Ackerson, the producer of “Fox N.F.L. Sunday,” said, “Our philosophy is if you’re in the arena of N.F.L. coverage, you’re fair game.”

A comic impresses as a cast of many
By Dan DeLuca
Inquirer Staff Writer

He's equally funny doing President Bush, John Madden or Al Pacino.

In the world of comedy, Frank Caliendo says, impressionists are like catchers in baseball.

"If you're a catcher, you have a better chance of getting to the major leagues if you're good, because not many people can do what you do," says the seriously funny stand-up, who plays the Music Box theater at the Borgata Hotel Casino tomorrow and Saturday. "And if you get there and can actually hit, well, then, everybody wants you."

For Caliendo, cracking jokes - in addition to doing hilarious impressions of President Bush and John Madden and the cast of Seinfeld, among many others - is akin to hitting. And luckily for him, as comedian-catchers go, he's more Joe Mauer than Rod Barajas. (Phillies fans know that's no joke.)

Boom! And an Impersonation
Requires No Punch Line

By RICHARD SANDOMIR
Published: January 25, 2007

Frank Caliendo, a short comic impressionist with a giant head and cherubic face (his descriptions), stood in his dressing room at CBS's "Late Show With David Letterman" studying his lines and waiting to become John Madden.

Soon, a makeup artist would lay on his fake nose and red eyebrows (which he uses for his Donald Trump imitation) and a hair stylist would plant a white wig on his head (size 7 7/8). Caliendo, 33, was dressed in standard Madden fashion: half-tucked white shirt, undone red tie, dark blazer, khaki pants and well-worn, untied sneakers in need of a good cleaning.

On a TV monitor, he could see the taping begin with a reading of the guest list. "John Madden is here," the announcer said.

Not Frank Caliendo. John Madden, with no hint that it wasn't.

"Isn't it insane?" Caliendo said, and a small smile creased his face.

Caliendo has made quite an impression:
By DAVID BARRON
Feb. 9, 2007, 8:40AM

If you care for the future of Fox NFL Sunday, consider visiting the Improv comedy club this weekend to beg, plead and implore Frank Caliendo (appearing through Sunday, don't forget to tip your waitress) to return to the show in 2007.

Caliendo's contract expired after the 2006 season, and, as befits an impressionist who can switch voices on a dime from John Madden to George W. Bush to Al Pacino to Jim Rome to David Letterman to Bill Clinton, he is of two minds on returning for a fifth year busting on Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and company.

"A piece of me really wants to do it," he said Wednesday during an appearance sponsored by KILT (610 AM). "Another piece says it's time to move on. ... Is it still fun? Yes, it is. Is it a pain sometimes? Yes, it is."

Comic Caliendo makes good impression on crowds:
By PAUL KOSIDOWSKI
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Posted: Jan. 21, 2007

Frank Caliendo is surely the life of any party. No surprise there.

You'd expect as much from a talented impersonation artist.

After all, there's no better way to get a party started than with a 3-minute version of "The Wizard of Oz" with Robin Williams playing all the parts.

Caliendo, in fact, is a party unto himself.

The best thing about the Waukesha South grad's comedy routine, which he presented Saturday night before two sold-out crowds at the Riverside Theater, is how it builds to a chaotic, multi-voiced climax - a U.N. General Assembly of sorts with a strange gaggle of celebrities.

Is that really Dubya?
Comedian excels with impressions:

By DAVE TIANEN
Posted: Jan. 19, 2007

When Frank Caliendo is on stage, the State of the Union is funny. When you see George W. Bush on MADtv, you're actually watching 33-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee alumnus Frank Caliendo. Caliendo's impressions of the president and former coach and Monday Night Football analyst John Madden are the two biggest hits in a set of impressions that includes Al Pacino, Donald Trump, Jay Leno, Ted Koppel, Robin Williams and even Janeane Garofalo. Raised in Waukesha, Caliendo will return to his home turf today for two shows at the Riverside Theater, 116 W. Wisconsin Ave. There are limited seats for the 5:30 p.m. show; the 8:30 p.m. show is sold out.

Caliendo spoke with Journal Sentinel music writer Dave Tianen on the art of impressionism.

By Gregg Hoffmann
Special to OMC
Published March 22, 2006 at 5:40 a.m.

TEMPE, ARIZ. -- Frank Caliendo does 10 minutes of impressions of Robin Williams and John Madden, much to the delight of his audience. Then, he sits down quietly in the back of this writer's Media Literacy class at UWM.

Just a few years ago, Caliendo played to audiences of fellow students in his UWM classes, and before that at Waukesha South High School. His following has grown considerably.

Caliendo now plays to hundreds of people in tours of comedy clubs nationwide. His April 2 appearance at Giggles in Germantown has been sold out for a couple weeks. He makes another appearance there in June, and tickets are going rapidly. Upcoming appearances in Minneapolis and Peoria also are sold out.
